The structure of the galleries themselves cannot be understood without looking at the cliff face into which they are set, because their external shape was determined by the form of the cliffs. As a result, unfinished spaces were left at hidden or hard-to-access points between the bare rock and the built structure. Those areas are visually attractive and have great potential for use during the restoration project and in the future.

Along with the almost 1000 m2 of useful surface area taken up by the three original structures (the main hall and the two walkways), we have now found five more areas behind the partition walls that close off the structure from the cliff face and under the floors. In all they provide a further 355 m2 of usable space with a truly striking atmosphere, where we can explain and share the historical and geological features of the site and find new ways of bringing the galleries back to life.

The first step in that process is to record every detail of each space. The complex shape of the site has led us to resort to state-of-the-art technology. A 3D scan of the spaces currently being used has been supplemented with true-view images, which enable every corner of the galleries to be observed on a computer. Mapping the lines of the building and the cliff clearly reveals the links between the built structure and the underlying rock. The site has been inspected carefully to enable the opportunities offered by each area to be determined, in terms of useful space, lighting and ventilation requirements, structural requirements and potential connections with other areas. We have now completed an assessment survey that will determine how these areas are used in the future.

Some of them are already in use. The area under the hall, where the explanations of the composition and age of the cliff face are given, and the access way to the garden from the hall via the rock face have recently been incorporated as extensions of the tour of the galleries.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space empty_h=”1″][vc_single_image media=”156″ caption=”yes” media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text el_class=”caption”]Researchers collecting data on site to record and assess the newly found spaces, 2017.
