{"id":1143,"date":"2018-04-12T20:09:13","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T20:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/puntabegonagaleriak.eus\/?page_id=1143"},"modified":"2018-04-12T20:11:00","modified_gmt":"2018-04-12T20:11:00","slug":"b10","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/puntabegonagaleriak.eus\/en\/b10\/","title":{"rendered":"b10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=&#8221;h1&#8243; text_size=&#8221;h1&#8243;]<strong>B.10<\/strong> THE AGE OF THE ROCKS[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of our research projects involves dating the various strata of rock that make up the cliff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To establish the relative ages of the rocks, we examine the micro-fossils preserved in them of ancient plankton that lived in the sea when each stratum was formed. Different fossil species can be associated with different eras, enabling us to date the samples studied. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Samples for dating are taken to a laboratory, where they are ground up and sifted through sieves with pre-set mesh sizes, in a process known as &#8220;levigation&#8221;. We then study the resulting material through a powerful binocular microscope to classify its fossil content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At Punta Bego\u00f1a we have found fossils dating from the Cretaceous period, such as white shells called <i>Globotruncanita sp.;<\/i> and from the Lower Tertiary period, such as the reddish, spherical shells of a species called <i>Subbotina sp<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These finds are significant, in that they enable us to date the cliffs at Punta Bego\u00f1a to the transitional period between the Cretaceous, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, and the Lower Tertiary, after the mass extinction that ended their reign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space empty_h=&#8221;1&#8243;][vc_single_image media=&#8221;226&#8243; caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; media_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;caption&#8221;]Microscope image of grains after sifting, 2017.
