Understanding its flow dynamics requires installing specific control devices generically referred to as piezometers. These involve boreholes in which a filtering tube is installed that monitors any variations that groundwater records over time.

We have installed four piezometers at the Punta Begoña Galleries. Two are in the garden, running to a depth of 25 metres, and the holes were sunk at an angle of 25º, one toward the lighthouse at our feet in the south-west gallery, with the other one behind the wall in the hall in the north-west gallery sloping toward Ereaga Beach. The other two have been deployed at the foot of the galleries, one in the land next to the lift in the north-west gallery and the second at the base of the rotunda in the south-west gallery; both these piezometers have been installed vertically and run to a depth of nine metres.

Each one provides a regular sampling of the groundwater, taken at a depth of five metres in the case of the vertical ones and at more than 20 metres with the angled ones, which is then analysed in a laboratory. We have also installed devices called DIVERS which measure and continuously record any changes in the water table (i.e., the upper level of the groundwater), conductivity or mineralisation, and temperature, which help us to identify its origin (i.e., the source of the water), where it filters down, the path it takes, and the materials it passes through.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space empty_h=”1″][vc_single_image media=”517″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text el_class=”caption”]Drilling one of the piezometric boreholes, 2016.
