The neglect that the Punta Bego\u00f1a Galleries suffered as from the 1980s led to uncontrolled access and the ensuing appearance of more or less ephemeral graffiti, which are part of what is now considered street art.<\/span><\/p>\n

These examples of graffiti, incisions and scrapings provide another way of understanding the uses this building has had in more recent times. Furthermore, they are an informative and meaningful example of the way part of society expressed itself, and are now part of the building\u2019s history. So much so, in fact, that their study, recording and appraisal have been treated with the same rigour as all the other iconographic features found on the walls in the galleries. We have used stratigraphic techniques to identify, record and document the most recent iconography to be found in the galleries; study their meaning and timeline; and formulate a hypothesis and interpretation of these images. This analytical method stems from the application of stratigraphic archaeology to buildings and involves breaking down the subject of study (our iconographic ensemble) into different units (each graffiti, the incisions and the scrapings), whose relative position enables us to establish a constructive sequence (in this case, the sequence in which they were applied).<\/span><\/p>\n

We have recorded a total of 739 items, dating from between 1981 and 2012. The hall and the north-west gallery have the highest concentration of these kinds of expressions, which is to be expected because these two areas did not have any doors or obstacles restricting access from the outside.<\/span><\/p>\n

These inscriptions on the walls do not have any intrinsic artistic value, nor do they tell us anything about the history of the building\u2019s early years. In spite of this, we believe they have considerable value for understanding the building\u2019s trajectory after its gradual abandonment, reflecting some of the artistic, political and romantic issues of the past decades. This research work has provided detailed information on how some of the people in Getxo felt, and ensures we are in a position to work on them and begin to remove them.<\/span><\/p>\n
