E.11 REMOVING RUBBLE
The neglect the galleries have suffered in recent decades has also led to the deterioration of the interior cladding materials. Weathering and the uncontrolled access of people, together with a lack of maintenance, have led to a major build up of waste throughout the building. However, not all the materials we encountered on the floors were in fact rubbish. Buried beneath the rubble were pieces of marble and tiling that were waiting to be recovered.
We have therefore put a lot of work into cleaning, screening, classifying and storing all the samples of the ornament that covered the walls and floors in the galleries. This will enable us to rebuild these decorations and fit in the missing pieces.
